Any new architectural project involving an AIA-KC registered architect is eligible to participate in the Art through Architecture program through the following process:

  1. Register to set up a consultation meeting with an AtA representative. (link) The representative will then contact architect and client to schedule an appointment.

  2. Review artists in the AtA on-line database of eligible artists.  Make note of artists of interest. Consider type(s) of work of interest in relation to project, whether completed artworks to display in the new building; new commissioned works for specific interior or exterior areas; or including an artist on a design team from the early stages of the project's development.

  3. Meet with AtA representative to discuss the AtA program, the architectural project, budget and desired level of Art Achievement, and possibilities for inclusion of artists and artworks. Continue to review artists and identify artists of interest.

  4. Visit studios and galleries of targeted artists. AtA representative will assist in scheduling and attending visits (extent determined relative to art budget).  If commissioning new work or including artist on design team, AtA representative will assist in helping to define project scope, contract with artist, and process for completion.

  5.  Purchase or commission artworksExisting works should be purchased directly from artists or galleries (when artists are represented). In the case of works purchased from galleries, 15% of price should be withheld, to be issued to AtA. In the case of works purchased directly from artists, 25% of price should be withheld, to be issued to AtA. Artists and galleries are aware of, and have signed a contract agreeing to this arrangement. In the case of commissions of new work, a contract with the artist should be established, with which AtA will assist as appropriate.

  6. Report art expenditures to AtA. Receipts from purchases should be saved and copies submitted to AtA, which will track client's progress toward Art Achievement level.  AtA invoices client for AtA fees on purchases and commissions as appropriate. Download tracking form

  7. Reconvene and review progress with AtA representative. Based on project specifics, AtA will begin work on press release, project feature on website, and related outreach and activities in relation to the Art Achievement project. Associated art costs (framing and other expenditures integral to the completion/installation of work) should be submitted and will be reviewed by AtA Steering Committee at this time.

  8. Celebrate completion of Art Achievement project with Art Achievement plaque, digital Art Achievement stamp, events and outreach, and other public recognition!
